John W. Thompson

John Walter Thompson peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family on a beautiful fall day, Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the age of 79.

John was born on a sunny April day in 1943 to Walter and Lauretta Thompson in Superior, WI. John grew up in Augusta, WI with his siblings, Jim and Lauretta "Kay", where he attended school excelling in basketball, baseball, and track. John was also a homecoming attendant and graduated in 1961. In 1961, John married Patricia Ziebell and to this union 3 children were born, Jim, Teri and Jane.  

John joined the air force in 1961 and was honorably discharged. John lived in Fall Creek where he drove for UPS and also was a DNR fire spotter. He later worked for Waste Management where he retired.  

Later in life, John married Debra Sherman and to this union was born a son, John II. He also became a father to Tammy and Jenny. After retirement, John enjoyed going to the casino and driving the back roads with his wife, Debbie.  

John was a special man who left many lasting memories with all who knew him.  

For his son, Jim, John was his best friend since the age of five. When Jim was eight, John bought him is first 22 rifle teaching him to shoot and at ten, John taught him to drive on the back roads of Augusta.  

John's daughter, Teri, remembers that he was always her confidant and fondly remembers hiking in the north woods and spending time with family in Iron River.  

His youngest daughter, Jane, remembers his kindness and humor he always showed and lots of memories with laughter. He always gave great advice and always had time to talk.  

John is survived by his wife, Debra "Debbie" Thompson; sons, James (Denise) Thompson and John Thompson II (special friend, Nicole); daughters, Teri Col'on (Steve Miescke), Jane (Mark) Schlageter, Tammy (Tony) Covington, and Jenny (Eirik) Schaad; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; beloved sister-in-law, Barbara Thompson; first wife, Patricia; sister-in-law, Marion; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved brother, James Thompson; and sister, Lauretta "Kay" McDonald.
