Edna Sue Hood died on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire with friends at her side. She was born on May 22, 1933, in Corsicana, Texas, the daughter of Leona (Skelton) and Reuben Thomas Hood. Edna's family lived in various parts of Texas while her father worked for the Texas Pipeline Company, and they settled in Sherman, Texas, permanently in 1941.

Edna was graduated from Sherman High School and attained her bachelor's degree from Austin College in Sherman, her master's from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Edna joined the faculty in the Department of English at UW-Eau Claire in 1965 where she was loved and respected by her students and colleagues. She retired as full professor in 1994.

Edna loved to travel and spent many summers visiting friends and traveling in Europe with her companion Jeanne and other friends. She also loved music and theatre. Some of her favorite trips included concerts and theatre performances in London, New York, The Kennedy Center, and The Guthrie in Minneapolis.

Edna will long be remembered for her generosity. She was an active member of Clear Water Kiwanis and Eau Claire County Democratic Party for many years and was passionate in her support of organizations and causes that were important to her. She deeply treasured her friends and was loved by many.

Edna is survived by her dear friend Jeanne Hugo and a legion of friends who will miss her greatly. Her friends all knew her to be full of fun and laughter as well as kindness, love, and generosity.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Aubre Marilyn, who died as an infant when Edna was not quite three.

Honoring a life with a meaningful service is an important step in the grief process and is a gift to their family and friends —
a gift of memories and a gift of healing
