Allen "Al" C. Gilbertson, age 90, of Eau Claire passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire.

Al was born on January 2, 1926 to the late Albert and Agnes (Anderson) Gilbertson in Chisholm, Minnesota. Al graduated from Eau Claire High School and then joined the U.S. Navy serving in Okinawa, Japan as a corpsman during WWII. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he married Clarice Murel Peterson.

He began working for the City of Eau Claire as a fire fighter and then transferred to the position of Election Clerk where he remained until his retirement. During retirement, Al spent his time chasing walleyes on the Holcombe Flowage teaching sons, grandkids and friends the fine art of fishing. Al also enjoyed hunting, watching the Packers, Badgers, and Brewers as well as inventing useful (as well as not so useful) gadgets.

Al is survived by his sister, Marge Rudd of Eau Claire; sons, James (Roxanne) of Eau Claire and Steven (special friend, Leslie Patrow) of Durand; grandchildren, Jayme Gilbertson (Todd Norrell) of Chippewa Falls, Bryan Gilbertson of Eau Claire, Jacob Gilbertson of Crestview, FL, Megan (Ian) Waldron of Pensacola, FL, Mitchell (Alicia) Gilbertson of Eau Claire; great grandchildren, Brianna Insteness (who cared for Al during his later years home stay), Madison Tucci, Kamryn Clarice Still, Hope Gilbertson, Adalyn Gilbertson, and Gavin Waldron; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clarice; sister, Francis Becker; and many other family members.

Honoring a life with a meaningful service is an important step in the grief process and is a gift to their family and friends —
a gift of memories and a gift of healing
