David A. Mertes, age 62, of Eau Claire died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

David was born on October 22, 1953 to the late Aloysius "Al" and Josephine (Martinson) Mertes in Enid, Oklahoma. His family later moved to Stevens Point, WI where David graduated from Pacelli High School. On June 22, 1991, he married Mary Zenner in Medford, Wisconsin.

For over 40 years he worked with Copps Food Center in various towns in Wisconsin before joining Gordy's County Market of the Chippewa Valley as a Meat Manager. David's easy going personality made him a people magnet. His considerate and selfless nature had him always taking care of others before himself.

David loved spending his free time in the outdoors doing one of his favorite pastimes of hunting, fishing, archery or trap shooting. He belonged to the Westgate Archery Club and the Mondovi Gun Club. He looked forward to his annual trips to Canada, cheering on the Packers, and spending time with his family - especially his beloved grandchildren who held a special place in his heart.

He had a love for life, always ready to celebrate and was the last to leave the dance floor. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Chad (Nicole) of Neenah and their children, Ethan and Ellie and his mother, Kathleen (Jeff) Mercier; daughter, Jennifer (Jamie) Eck of Kaukauna and their children, Tyler (stationed in Naples, Italy), Chelsea, and Logan; siblings, Tom (Lois) Mertes of Appleton, Julie (Dan) Appel of Green Bay, Janet Mertes (Randy Keen) of Stevens Point, Peggy (Jim) Lemancik of Appleton, and Tony Mertes (Sue Kranski) of Stevens Point; Al's companion and "grandma", Lois Meshak of Stevens Point; father-in-law, Clifford Zenner of Medford; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Sandy (Gordon) Bach, Kurt (Lori) Zenner both of Medford, and Lee (Joyce) Zenner of Hastings, MN; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Elaine Zenner.

Honoring a life with a meaningful service is an important step in the grief process and is a gift to their family and friends —
a gift of memories and a gift of healing
