Eau Claire Community Outreach Events

Grief Support Circle
Grief Circle
Sponsored by Newman Parish, Eau Claire - Spring 2024

This is a six week series that will meet from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, April 4, 11, 18, 25, and May 2 & 9 at the Ecumenical Religious Center (110 Garfield Avenue, Eau Claire, WI  54701).

Everyone in the Chippewa Valley is welcome to participate. This group provides a safe place for those experiencing grief and the loss of a loved one. It is a time of learning about grief, and the opportunity to share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns with others who understand. The facilitators, Laurie Hittman and Sue Ripp, have experienced the death of parents, a sibling, a child, and friends. The support of others on the same journey can provide a great deal of comfort and healing.

For more information or to register contact:
Laurie Hittman 715-379-4110 jlhittman@jlhittman.com
Sue Ripp 715-829-3822 sueripp@charter.net

There is no fee for this series, but registration is required by March 21, 2024.

Helping people of all ages with grief
All of us experience some sense of grief. In our ever changing days/hours, grief is affecting all of our lives. We may have a loss of a loved one, loss of social interaction, a loss of job, and so much more.

Most adults may have (or know how to) find ways to cope with this, but our children - probably not. They may seem okay, but may not know how to communicate what they are feeling.

Here is a good way for them (and all of us) to express ourselves right now. Grab a piece of paper and a writing utensil. Have them draw a circle or a couple of them. Ask them (or yourself) to draw a face in the circle showing how they are feeling right now. It might be happy, sad, angry, confused, etc. Encourage them to explain why they are feeling that way. This is hard, but just listen. Encourage their feelings, don't dismiss or downplay them.

Now, ask them to draw a happy face (if that was not what they drew). Discuss with them what would make them feel happy. Remember their age and that the request might be undoable right now. But help them think of things they could do that would bring some happy into their life right now. Keep it real and keep it simple. It doesn't take much.

I hope you find this helpful! Take care. Kelly : )
