Mabel "Mae" E. Hanson, age 96, of Eau Claire passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health System Eau Claire.

Mae was born on January 29, 1919 to the late Henry and Clara (Pagenkopf) Wendt in Estella Township, Wisconsin where she attended school through 8th grade. She worked closely with her brothers and sister on the family farm doing chores and having fun. In her teens, she also helped out neighbors doing household chores.

At 17, she traveled by train to Minneapolis looking for work as a housemaid (which she did) returning home a few months later. One winter, she went skating in Chippewa Falls and met a young man, Louis Hanson. They began dating and later married in Decorah, Iowa on October 27, 1940 enjoying over 60 years of marriage.

They moved to Eau Claire and built their home on the east side. Mae always said she would live the rest of her life there, which she did to her last hours. She truly enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and the role of being a Homemaker. Her home was a place of pride - decorating it and entertaining her bridge club. Mae was an outstanding seamstress enjoying sewing for herself and for others.

For over 50 years, Mae and Louis had cottages on Lake Holcombe where many happy years were spent fishing, snowmobiling, enjoying the outdoors and making friends. They also enjoyed many travels through the years including Hawaii, Texas, Florida and to little towns up north to find treasures. Mae enjoyed a very fun and fulfilled life and will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Julia) Hanson of Sun Prairie, WI; daughter, Diane (Larry) Bergh of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Sheri Bergh of Eau Claire and Ryan J. (Theresa) Bergh of Waukesha, WI; great-granddaughter, Jessica; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Louis on February 12, 2002; brothers, Julius, Harvey, and George Wendt; and sister, Louise Van Den Heuvel.
