Darrell D. Borgwardt, age 83, of Lake Hallie, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 20, 2016.

Darrell was born on August 16, 1933 to the late Herman and Inez (Pabst) Borgwardt in Mondovi, WI. On April 17, 1954, he married the love of his life, Joyce Schultz enjoying 62 years of marriage. Together they had 3 children, John, JoAnn, and Peggy. Darrell and Joyce lived in Gilmanton until they moved to Lake Hallie in August, 1966. Darrell attended the Harvey School in Mondovi through the eighth grade and later joined the Wisconsin National Guard.

He was a member of Laborer Union 317 and worked construction for Hoeppner & Bartlett; retiring after 36 years. During his "retirement" Darrell worked 8 years as a custodian for UW-Eau Claire. He will be remembered as one of the hardest working persons you could have ever met. Darrell was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.

Darrell had a great sense of humor and especially loved to tease his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to eat, talk, joke, and laugh with everyone. Many years were enjoyed camping at Wolf's Den in Cameron, WI. He loved fishing with Joyce on their pontoon and driving around the campground in his golf cart he affectionately called his "Doodlebug."

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, John (Julie) Borgwardt of Eau Claire, JoAnn (Luke) Gronberg of Thorp, and Peggy (Steve) Erickson of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Joy (James) Weisner, Jill (Jeremy) Wendtland, Justin (Caylee) Borgwardt all of Eau Claire, Heath (Angela) Berg of Austin, TX and Miranda Burton of Menomonie; great grandchildren, Brieana, Olivia, Andrew, Quentin, Kolten, Beau, Capryce, Caleah; brother, Kenneth (Wilma) Borgwardt of Menomonee Falls; God children, Cathy Kent and Jerry Meistad; many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Darrell was preceded in death by his sisters, Elizabeth Buchholz and Frances Hanson; brothers, Walter, Merle, Chuck, and George.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank St. Joseph's Hospice (Barb and John) along with the doctors and nurses at Mayo Health Clinic Health System Eau Claire Cancer Center for their loving care of Darrell. Also thanks for all the prayers everyone has said for him and our family.

More than words can express, he will be missed by all who knew him.

Honoring a life with a meaningful service is an important step in the grief process and is a gift to their family and friends —
a gift of memories and a gift of healing
