Walter was born on December 26, 1918 to the late Joseph and Mary (Pimiskern) Koller. He grew up in Appleton moving back later to raise his family with his wife, Grace. Walter and Grace Wolf were married on February 14, 1942.

After completing two years of high school, Walter became an apprentice patternmaker at the age of 17. Due to his profession, he was not drafted during WWII but used his skills building submarines, tanks, guns and airplanes for the war effort. Following the war, Walter worked in several pattern shops in Oshkosh, Fond Du Lac, and finally in Waukesha where he worked for Waukesha Patterns until his retirement at 62.

Walter and Grace were avid Square Dancers the majority of their lives; even doing some exhibition square dancing. They enjoyed many travels with their friends made through Square Dancing and with the travel club they joined going to Egypt, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Morroco, Hawaii and many more.

In his later years, Walter became an avid golfer getting a "Hole-in-One." Retiring to warmer climate at The Villages in Lady Lake, Florida, Walter would spend most of his days golfing. After Grace died  in 2004, he returned to Wisconsin to be close to family living at Oakwood Hills Retirement the past 7 years. He enjoyed playing cribbage, sheep head and became an avid pool player. Everyone remembers him always smiling, being outgoing and friendly.
