William "Bill" L. Heimstead, age 78, of Eau Claire, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.

Bill was born on December 12, 1938 to the late Ray and Frances (Morrisey) Heimstead. He grew up in Eau Claire and graduated from Regis High School in 1957. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school. Upon returning home he married the love of his life, Diane Stelter, on December 29, 1960. Bill worked as a meat cutter for Peters Meats until they closed in the early '70s. He then worked for the State of Wisconsin with the UWEC grounds crew until his retirement in 2001.

Bill loved the memories and camaraderie that came with ice fishing, squirrel hunting, playing cards, grilling out, lifting weights and get togethers with family and friends. His family will fondly remember him by his hearty laugh, his love for family, and will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Jeff (Deb) Heimstead, Jodie (Jim) Carlson, Randi (Amy) Heimstead; grandchildren, Aimee (Eric) Rehberg, Heidi (Devin) Harings, Samuel (Sammie) Heimstead, Alisha and Reed Heimstead; great grandchildren, Wesley, Ellianna, Adalee, Noah, Remington, and Merrick; sister, Rae Berger; sister-in-law, Barbara Wangen; brother-in-law, Larry (Linda) Stelter; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary (Dan) Sederstrom; brother-in-law, Mark Berger, mother- and father-in-law, Elmer and Caroline (Strauch) Stelter.

The family would like to thank Mayo Clinic Health System Cancer Center-Eau Claire, Dr. Basu, Mayo Clinic Home Health Care and Hospice, and a special thank you to Jackie.

Until we meet again Dad…
"Bones"
